Preserving the freshness of fruit and vegetables after harvesting is based on two processes: slowing down their respiration and limiting the evaporation of their internal water.

When the CA lid is placed on a container of products whose respiration rate is reduced by the cold, its seal helps to maintain the moisture content of the stored products. Its selectively permeable membranes stabilize the oxygen and CO2 content between 1 and 5%, using the O2 absorption of the products’ respiration as a driving force. This reduction in oxygen causes a second reduction in respiration, further extending the storage time.

The simultaneous adjustment of the three pillars of preservation (temperature, relative humidity, and O2/CO2 balance), which is achieved in the modules arranged in the cold room, thus naturally ensures the best storage quality.

Use

The module is designed for the cold storage of a wide range of fruit, vegetables, cut flowers, mushrooms, herbs, and spices.

When sealing the modules after the products have cooled to the recommended temperature, it is important to ensure that the lid is properly secured to the container to ensure the module is watertight.

If the module is used under conditions other than those recommended (storage temperature, product quantity per container, number of membranes, suitable harvest stage), the quality of preservation may be compromised. The tightness of the lid is essential for good gas diffusion: Special attention must be paid to the seal and membranes when the lids are not in use.

The O2 & CO2 content inside the modules can be monitored using a Tiempo test (silver or green).

The module is used for storing live, breathing products.

The advantages of the CA storage box

In conventional cold stores, air circulation removes moisture from the products, leading to high weight losses – e.g. up to 10% for apples or 20% for chestnuts. The CA storage box cools directly in special modules, keeping the products fresh and reducing weight loss to just 1.5% – a clear economic advantage for weight-dependent sales.
